SENT ON BEHALF OF NICK TRIERWEILER, CREW 513

We are pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts to observe and participate in hands-on activities relating to archeology in Texas.  During April and May of 2009, the City of Austin will be sponsoring an archeological excavation at Zilker Park.  This excavation will focus on the Paleoindian Period, the oldest time that people have lived in Texas, about 10,000 to 12,000 years ago.  The City of Austin and the archeologists of Ecological Communications Corporation (EComm) would like to invite
area Scouts to the site for fun, learning, and possible completion of requirements towards the Archeology Merit Badge.

The Paleoindian component of this unique site is buried more than 10 feet below the ground surface.  In order to reach it, archeologists plan to strip off the upper layers of soil and then commence excavations at the bottom of a pit.  Visitors will be able to observe the work through a safe viewing area.  Additionally, an interpretive booth will be set up on site and a guide will be available seven days a week to give background about the site, show visitors the excavations, and provide updates about what the archeologists are
finding.

On weekends, Scouts and other youth will also have the opportunity to sift through some of the dirt using real archeological screens and under the supervision of professional archeologists.  This dirt will be stockpiled on site and will likely contain many artifacts. (All artifacts will remain the property of the City of Austin.)  This is an opportunity for Scouts and their parents to observe and participate in the real work of archeology and Boy Scouts who participate at the site for at least 8 hours will have completed
requirement 8(a) towards the Archeology Merit badge.  Interested Unit Leaders should contact Rachel Feit at rfeit@ecommcorporation.com to schedule a date and time.
